Fallen Empires 40

Forgotten Realms logo

Fallen Empires 40 is a constructed old-school variant “wedge” format that uses the Fallen Empires expansion only as it’s base card pool. It is often referred to as “FE40” or “Fallen Empires 40 Traditional”

Fallen Empires 40 originated on the playground during the ‘94-’95 school year and gained popularity in the Cleveland Ohio area OS scene and beyond during 2021. FE40 emphasizes a “fun before finance” approach to OS and a unique constructed environment. An active online league began in 2022 with global participation. Current rules and restrictions are based largely on observational data from this gauntlet and are subject to change.

Variants:

As Fallen Empires has a limited card pool, to keep things interesting, there are several sets that are often integrated into leagues/constructed tournaments. 9 cards from a different release (see below) can be included in decks, following regular deckbuilding rules, and using Fallen Empires as the base set of sorts. Players are encouraged to try these “splashes”, although make sure that it is clear what tournament card pool is prior to implementing a “splash”.

Effective “splash” sets: -The Dark (+9) -Homelands (+9) -Alliances (+9) -Chronicles (+9) -“Sarpadian Scryings (+9) List here (Sarpadian Scryings is a lore-heavy “expansion” developed by format spearheads Mike Klements and John Ekleberry, and may be subject to revision)

The card PHYREXIAN PORTAL has the following errata for webcam matches: “3: If your library has ten or more cards in it, target opponent looks at the top ten cards of your library and separates them into two face-up piles. Exile one of those piles at random. Search the other pile for a card, put it into your hand, then shuffle the rest of that pile into your library. “
